We have heaps of black and white birds of all shapes and sizes .. I often have difficulty in identifying them as a result. I have to look up the bird book and look for subtle things like ... does it have a red or yellow eye etc. I remember getting into trouble from fellow Australian bloggers once for calling a black bird as blackbird when it wasn't.
veredit, thank you. It was a wonderful moment, indeed. The photo shows a Alpendohle and wikipedia says: "Bei der Suche nach Essensresten kann die Alpendohle sehr zutraulich sein ... ." I can confirm this - I only got half of my sandwich for myself ;-).
Joan Elizabeth, I think I can recall this discussion, grin. There is an extraordinary German website (and apps for smartphones, too) for identifying birds by the shape of the beak, size, colour etc. I use it quite often. I know it is useless since it is a) German and b) about German birds, nevertheless, I like it so much, here is the url:
This is more a daily feed than a daily blog.
Photos are resized or may be cropped - that's the only post-processing I do.
The quotes: it is essential to me to only quote from things I am currently reading ... I must admit it is sometimes lopsided ... reading a 1000 page novel takes some time ;-)

The google translation is a little bit funny but it might be useful, though.
