Now we see the abandon ... an 800 page novel eeeeek ... I would only ever attempt such a thing on a very long holiday.

Really fascinating photo. The snakey rails (?) leading into the photo are great.

They must not be very good bandits if they're ragged! It looks more like a rail yard than a steel factory from this angle.

I love industrial photographs like this. It is so honest and basic. There is something appealling in the abandon of it and the inability of man to create something sustainable. Once we have used it, we are unable or unwilling to do anything with it and merely move on to somewhere else. It is a really cynical thought but makes for a great photograph!

Agree with Sean: the abandon makes for a great image. Love the twist in the rails.

Joan Elizabeth, it is even worse: it's the second part of a trilogy, look at this The last photo ;-)!

Tash, yes, these are rails, "snakey" is cool.

kobico, if AB were around I would say: it's because they are Saarländer! >.->
Everything that was brought to the steelworks was transported by train, coals, etc. this is part of the coking plant.

Sean, it is a photographer's paradise and also of course a paradise for everyone who is interested in technics, engineering, industry, chemistry etc.. But it is also part of heavy industry that is no more competitive in Europe - is it really because we are unable and unwilling?

Julie, thx. Nice to have you back in bloggerland, :-)

I meant unable or unwilling to return it to its "former" glory... nature more like it... we just leave it and go elsewhere.

I should point out the Saarländer have carefully cultivated the abandoned look to draw in hordes of tourist photographers from neighbouring Rheinland-Pfalz.

I do not want to steal Martina's story but this is probably on the grounds of the Völklinger Hütte, an old steelworks dating back to 1873, now a UNESCO world heritage site and venue for artistic exhibitions and concerts.

My goodness ... 3 fat books, imagine writing all that ... I can tell from the blurbs that they would not be my cup of tea ... but I'm still enjoying the quotes.

AB, you are not stealing my story at all: your English is far better than mine so go on ... :-)

Sometimes I am really too tired to make my brain construct English sentences and so I usually say a third of the things I would have said in German ;-)
