Nice blog.

Progress as a culture -- by following each other, doing the same thing over and over again (like getting milked 2 or 3 times a day). Interesting to ponder on.

They could really cause a traffic jam! I'm guessing an alm is in the mountains and includes pasture for grazing?

I was in the Pyrenees last year and walked past some resident bovines. The only noise besides the crunching of our feet was the hollow toll of their bells. Very peaceful. Very special.

Haha, not unlike sitting in rush hour traffic to get to the office where we tap on the computer, talk on the phone, grab a cup of coffee and repeat several times a day!

Joan Elizabeth, kobico: even if I was thinking more in the line of "cattle breeding and the rise of civilisations" if thinking at all, both your interpretations are cool.

kobico, yes, that's an alm, usually with a small cabin (Almhütte) for the shepherd to live during the summer. And it is wonderful there, yes.

Chapa, thank you! :-)
