I do love them. I'm lucky enough to live in an area where there are a lot of them to look at. I was once walking in a nearby nature preserve, quietly, and came around a corner to find myself face to face with a wild boar! I had a tripod that I tried to place between us and he, luckily for me, thought it was a gun and disappeared. He was probably 220 lbs (100kg). But he was beautiful.
James, wild boars are quite abundant in Germany - the English wikipedia says: Recently, Germany has reported a surge in the wild boar population. According to one study, "German wild boar litters have six to eight piglets on average, other countries usually only about four or five." Boar in Germany are also said to be becoming increasingly 'brazen' and intruding further into cities such as Berlin. BTW - the females are the ones to fear ;-)
