AB, when I have this issue with some blogs I simply create a new empty comment and activate the subscribing. After publishing the comment there is of course an error but the subscribing works. I am not sure what enables the after-commenting-subscribing-ability (duuuh) in some blogs - I am under the impression it's no problem when captchas are not enabled, but I am not sure. Never really analysed it :-(.
There is a chance this little fellow is over-estimating his influnce for good!

I don't know about his influence, but its face does seem pretty gleeful, a similar look to when my dog is waiting for me to throw the ball for her!
